The sodа bread on Christmas Eve is „lean“– no butter, no milk, no yeast. We knead it carefully and know that it will never be fluffy and soft, like the traditional soda bread, but in the spirit of the traditions and rules of an odd number of lean dishes on the table, we also put this bread in the center and give it life. 1) The lucks: Each region in Bulgaria follow different traditions. We add the following lucks in the bread:
- a bean – for wisdom
- a coin – for money
- a button – for luck
- а dogwood twig – for health
- а straw / or tooth-pick – for abundance
2) Shaping: Set aside some of the dough and form on top – your house, put a fertility tree, put on the sun to add lightness to your days and form a wreath around the bun.

After sitting at the table, the oldest member of the family breaks the bun with his hands. The first piece is placed on the icon of the Virgin Mary, the second is set aside for the house, and then a piece for each member of the family. The age line is followed – from the oldest to the youngest member of the family.
To knead the Soda Bread for Christmas Eve, you need several products: wholegrain flour, white flour, baking soda, lemon juice, a little honey, salt, and olive oil.
