Switching to a more healthful diet can be a challenge. We live in a society where we are continuously confronted by advertisements urging us to eat nutrition-poor, highly processed food. Fast food restaurants offering free toys to children lined streets in almost every city and town. Billboards beckon us to eat what is quick, convenient, easy and terribly unhealthy. We are bombarded with television, magazine, and supermarket ads offering choices that are unhealthy at best, illness causing at worst. But what can we do?

If you are a parent, the Pediatrics will provide you guidelines for helping children keep healthy and fit. They recommend providing a variety of nutritious foods and limiting fat intake. Children over the age of two should limit fat intake to less than 30% of the total daily calories. Limiting fast foods which are high in fat and sodium and are generally sold in large portions, is a good place to start. Prepare foods at home as often as you can. Involve children in food selection and preparation. Children are more likely to eat food that they have helped choose and prepare and cooking will educate them about what’s in the food they eat. Offer water instead of fruit juice just things for a soda. Make sure your children get enough calcium. Encourage them to eat slowly. And to truly enjoy the ritual of eating and make sure they get plenty of sleep.

Children who eat well experienced less fatigue, have more energy and have better concentration. They are more fit for sports and other physical activities, and they have a lower obesity rate.

Whether you’re feeding your children or just yourself if your diet is not what you’d like it to be try to incorporate the following suggestions one at a time into your daily routine.
