Muhallabia – Middle East Pudding

Muhallabia - Middle East Pudding

Muhallabia – the milk puddings of the Middle East are delectable and moreish, often enhanced with the medieval notes of scented, floral waters. The basic recipe remains the same throughout Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Turkey.

Muhallabia is the Middle East’s answer to panna cotta😊. Very much like Pudding, it is extremely easy to make. Only a few minutes to make and then cool in the fridge for 3 hours.  If you like milky puddings, you’re going to love this one!

Muhallabia Ingredients

Muhallabia is a rose flavored, simple milk dessert. All you need to make it: rice flour, milk, sugar, rosewater, and pistachios to decorate.

How to serve Muhallabia

  1. Crushed pistachios or almonds for decoration with some powder sugar on top – provide a wonderful contrast in texture.
  2. Crushed rose petals are another common way to serve – these do not really do anything in terms of flavor, they just provide a visual enhancement.
  3. The classic flavor comes from rose water or rose syrup. But you can use also orange water.  If you cannot get rose syrup, think fresh berries, caramel (salted caramel would be good). Not traditional but also good!
  4. Chocolate is always good too! Whether you grate some chocolate onto the Muhallabia.
  5. And, how about some strawberries?

Try it, it is simple, delicious and will vanish within minutes!
